Nestled between
the spectacular Selkirk and Monashee Mountains,
Revelstoke offers full visitor services in our
charming downtown area. Quaint boutiques, casual
coffee bars and restaurants are all within easy
walking distance in Revelstoke. The
City of Revelstoke is rich in history.
Revelstoke Downtown Revitalization has restored
over two dozen heritage buildings from the
Victorian Era to their original splendor. A tour
gives a glimpse of the many architectural trends
throughout the past. Revelstoke began in the
1880s as a transportation and supply center
for
BC's mining industry. This was soon bolstered by
the construction of the trans-continental
railway and the subsequent decision of the
Canadian Pacific railway to establish its main
operations offices and maintenance facilities.
The railway played a large part in the area's
development and its story can be viewed at the
Railway Museum.
Today this
vibrant community is developing into one of
British Columbia's all season playgrounds.
Outdoor adventures take advantage of the areas
breathtaking scenery with back country hiking,
ski touring, heli-skiing, snowmobiling, downhill
skiing, snowboarding, camping, biking, river
rafting, boating, rowing, canoeing and kayaking.
Revelstoke also has an 18 hole championship golf course,
bowling lanes, fitness centers, tennis courts,
skating arena, curling rink, and a spectacular
new aquatic centre. The area boasts two national
parks, three BC provincial parks, several
municipal parks, hot spring developments, and an
abundance of camping opportunities.
The 100th
anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Begbie
is coming up in June members of the Mount Begbie
ASCENTennial Committee have a unique celebratory
gift for the community — a time capsule,
purchased with assistance from the City of
Revelstoke and the Community Futures Development
Corporation, that will be buried on the mountain
this summer. Children’s essays, artworks and
other objects will be preserved within it until
2107.
